The Italian G20 Presidency: a historic opportunity for the Country
1 December 2020 officially marked the start of Italy’s presidency of the G20, which will culminate in the G20 Leaders’ Summit hosted on 30 and 31 October in Rome. In a context in which international relations tend to be increasingly multidimensional and interconnected, the Italian programme revolves around the trinomial People, Planet, Prosperity, offering guidelines for caring for the Planet and people, ensuring a strong economic recovery that is both inclusive and sustainable. In view of the scant attention that the media and information have dedicated to what is, for our Country, a unique and historic opportunity, Eurispes has decided to draw up, by Councillor Giovanni Tartaglia Polcini, a member of the Institute’s Scientific Committee, a brief vademecum explaining the main areas of intervention and the objectives of the G20. At the same time, the aim of this ‘guide’ is to give an idea of what a prestigious and responsible assignment like this means for our country. The pandemic has caused profound damage, negatively affecting health systems, poverty indices and the global economy: we are now facing what is perhaps the most difficult time since the end of the world wars. In this context, Italy is called upon to manage and interpret, in an informed manner, the role of leader, coordinating the work of the G20 which, this year more than ever, will not only be an opportunity for dialogue and comparison but a starting point for building together the policies of the world to come.
