TV News from 6 to 10 September – The twelfth season of the TV News Observatory opens with the twentieth anniversary of the 11 September attack, which, is accompanied in all the newspapers by great bitterness due to the return to power of the Taliban in Afghanistan and the repressive measures they have implemented, especially against women and minorities. In a framework of strong and widespread criticism, it is the Mediaset TV news that intervenes more clearly, openly denouncing the abandonment of the West (editorial by Pierluigi Battista on the cover of Tg5 on Friday). The appeal for a more concrete positioning on the European side was also made clear on Tuesday in a Mediaset TV News interview with General Claudio Graziano, President of the EU Military Committee, from which emerged the need for a common European army (a project also dear to Berlusconi). The RAI channels take a similar attitude, producing in-depth reports on the situation of Afghan citizens in a climate of constraint and threats, in which even flying kites can be banned (and punished) as a “violation of the Sharia”.

The political debate on the green pass, compulsory vaccination and the third dose, occupies the opening of the first part of the week, with headlines and reports dedicated to the different and consolidated positions. The operation of Thursday, against a violent fringe of no vax who planned on chat rooms attacks during the demonstrations planned for Saturday in the capital, produces a strong position of Tg4 that harshly attacks these characters, described as a “Brancaleone army”, with interventions by the conductors and an interview on Friday to the governor of Liguria Giovanni Toti, also in the target of the “web haters”. In the meantime, the numbers of the contagion remain stable, with Tg La7 reporting a modest drop on Friday, accompanied however by a higher number of victims than the other European countries’ average.

The electoral campaign for the administrative vote of 3 and 4 October still remains in a low key on the newspapers, with the exception of Tg La7 that on Monday proposes the polls on the ballots in the capital, and Tg4 that during the week devotes six headlines to the failures of some “adverse” mayors, Raggi and Sala. Rete 4 TV channel also attacked Minister Luciana Lamorgese, with two headlines between Wednesday and Thursday dedicated to the investigation of the newspaper La Verità on the unauthorised maxi rave held in August in the province of Viterbo (interview with Belpietro), without the appropriate intervention of the Viminale. Tg2 was critical but balanced, with Director Sangiuliano interviewing Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti on Tuesday on the subject of citizenship income, recording the pros and cons of a measure that seems to satisfy no one.

The spike in the number of victims of feminicide (5 in six days) brings the subject to the attention of prime time. Tg3 took a strong stance, dedicating its single headline and the first part of its Friday edition to this scourge of our society. The editions also focus on the too many deaths at work, reported in the mid-week headlines.

National pride and space for RAI news to the recent excellent sports results of Italian athletes. Mediaset news dedicated many headlines and in-depth coverage to the celebrities who walked the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival this week.

The dramatic images of Thursday’s rescue of migrants on Isola dei Conigli brought the theme of landings back to prime time for a day (headline for Tg La7), but no headline took the opportunity to provide real insights. Almost all the newspapers wished Liliana Segre well on her 91st birthday on Friday.
