The President of Eurispes, Gian Maria Fara, speaker at the three-day conference on the study, analysis and monitoring of mafia phenomena sponsored by the Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis

The first day of study, analysis and monitoring of mafia phenomena in Italy opened this morning. The three-day conference, organised by the Pontificia Academia Mariana Internationalis’s Department of Analysis, Study and Monitoring of Criminal and Mafia Phenomena, will be attended by scholars, magistrates and representatives of the police forces engaged in the fight against organised crime.

The meeting’s central theme will be “The presence and evolution of indigenous and foreign mafias in our country”, which will be addressed by also making constant reference to Pope Francis’ reminder during yesterday’s Angelus. On the Day of Remembrance, commemorating the victims of the mafia, the Pontiff wished to stress once again that the mafias are “contrary to the Gospel” and must be fought in their attempt to exchange “faith for idolatry”.

The opening greetings were entrusted to the President of the Pontifical Marian Academy International, Stefano Cecchin, the Rector Magnificus of the Pontifical Antonianum University, Agustin Hernandez, and the Attorney General of the Military Court of Appeal, Maurizio Block.

In the afternoon session, starting at 3.30 p.m., the President of Eurispes, Gian Maria Fara, will address the meeting, which will include, among other speakers, the Deputy Prosecutors of the National Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate, Giovanni Russo and Maria Vittoria De Simone, the Honourable President Rosi Bindi, former President of the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission, and Nando Dalla Chiesa, Full Professor of Sociology of Organised Crime. Closing remarks, P. Gian Matteo Roggio, Pontifical Academic. Fabio Iadeluca, Pontifical Academic, will moderate the day.
