Eurispes: permanent working table launched between Uzbekistan and Italy

The establishment of a permanent Working table to deepen and strengthen the areas and opportunities for collaboration between Italy and Uzbekistan: this was the proposal that emerged during the second in-person meeting with the delegation of representatives of the major research centres of Uzbekistan that took place in Rome at the Eurispes headquarters on Monday May 29, 2023.

The delegation from Uzbekistan, led by Eldor T. Aripov, Director of the Institute of Strategic and Regional Studies under the President of Uzbekistan, consisted of the following representatives: Sherzod M. Fayziyev, Deputy Director of the International Institute for Central Asia, Umid K. Abidkhodjaev, Director of the Institute for Macroeconomic and Regional Studies, Donier J. Kurbanov, Director of the Information and Analytical Center for International Relations under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Oybek G. Shahavdinov, Head of the Department for cooperation with European countries and EU institutions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, Shahnoza B. Kodirova, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Strategic and Regional Studies under the President of Uzbekistan.

On behalf of Eurispes, the Secretary General, Marco Ricceri, and the members of the Institute’s Board of Directors, lawyers Angelo Caliendo and Roberto De Vita, brought the welcome greetings of President Gian Maria Fara and illustrated the main findings of the 35th Italy Report, which has just been published. They then went on to identify the main areas of interest in order to promote joint analysis and research activities as a contribution to strengthening cooperation between Italy and Ubekistan. A valuable contribution to this end came from the experts on Central Asian reality and sustainable development who spoke at the meeting: Giuliano Bifolchi, co-founder of the ASRIE association, Silvia Boltuc, director of SpecialEurasia, Gianfranco Tamburelli, from the DiPE Department of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, who illustrated the Italian government’s programmes on sustainable development.

Among the main areas of future joint activities of the Italy-Uzbekistan Working Table, the following were identified: the comparison between the national plans for sustainability of the two states, also with reference to the system of governance put into practice, the fight against corruption, cyber security, relations between Italy-Uzbekistan and the European Union, the fight against climate change and interventions for the protection of water resources, policies for the circular economy, infrastructure and transport, agriculture with particular attention to the processes of modernisation of the sector and digital agriculture. On the areas of interest identified, Eurispes will activate the experts working within its Observatories and Permanent Laboratories.
