Most headlines focused on the management of the epidemic. Lombardy: Bertolaso is not enough. On Mediaset attacks on the (Centre-Left) caste. Analysis of the Eurispes-CoRiS Sapienza Television News Observatory.

News from 22 to 26 March 2021

The management of the epidemic currently imposes itself on all news broadcasts, as has not happened since last April: a total of 35 out of 35 headlines. Premier Draghi’s “eagerly awaited” words dominate the scene. After weeks in which he had been accused of excessive silence, with his speeches at home and at the European level, the Prime Minister ended up 40 times in the headlines: more than Conte, Letta and Salvini put together. The Premier holds a hard line against AstraZeneca, and so the investigation into more than 27 million doses of vaccine stored in the factories of Anagni collects – on Wednesday – seven headlines, including three openings.

Still high numbers of confirmed cases. Friday, some newspapers reported that the virus is slowing down at the local level, in a scenario that sees all regions alternate between orange and red colour restrictions. Mediaset gave much space to reset the top management of the Lombard company Aria decided in extremis by the Health Minister Fontana, with Tg4 claiming the “merit” of having reported the problems and delays in the vaccination campaign. Paradoxically, in a problematic attempt to defend the main region led by the Lega, on Thursday, Tg4 launches an editorial against Guido Bertolaso, guilty of having refused criticism in the press, inviting him to follow the example of Chancellor Merkel and make him apologise.

Harsh attacks by the Mediaset news also towards the President of the Anti-Mafia Commission Nicola Morra, guilty of a “raid with security” at the vaccination centre of Cosenza (in the headlines Monday also for Tg La7 and Tg2), with the commentator Guzzanti on Tg4 speaking of “absolute arrogance”. More or less the same does the Tg5, offering Wednesday and Friday two editorials very critical of both Morra and other centre-left members, including Boldrini, accused of having abused their authority in the logic of “you do not know who I am”.

On Wednesday, President Mattarella paid homage to the martyrs of the Fosse Ardeatine massacre in Rome. The seventh centenary of Dante Alighieri’s death has won unusual space in the culture pages of television news, also present in the headlines for Tg Rai and Tg5.

Reduced space for foreign affairs. The stranding of one of the largest container ships in the middle of the Suez Canal, and the consequent damage to world trade, garnered five headlines. The sanctions imposed by the United States and Europe against China for its repression of the Uighur minority received attention on Monday from Tg La7 and Tg2. Tg3 was the only one to report on the Patrick Zaki case and raised Amnesty’s complaints against another very similar story concerning an Egyptian activist.Tg5 on Friday was the only one to report the harsh attacks by the recently rehabilitated former President Lula against Bolsonaro’s handling of the pandemic in Brazil, where 3,000 people die every day.

Tg2 brings the “big news” back into vogue, inaugurating a daily column with a dignified title dedicated to “Italy in yellow”, that is to say, to the criminals involved in heinous events in past and recent history. In the background, several media reported the final sentence on Luca Traini, who in February 2018 opened fire on foreign citizens in Macerata, injuring 6 of them. Headlines for Studio Aperto, Tg1 and Tg3 – the latter being the only one to collect the victims’ testimonies.
