The Secretary General of Eurispes, Marco Ricceri, at the international multidisciplinary conference “The rise of Asia”.
Eurispes at the International Multidisciplinary Conference:
“The rise of Asia”.
Paris – Le Havre, 10-12 February 2021
Eurispes is participating in the International Multidisciplinary Conference “The rise of Asia” scheduled for 10-12 February 2021 at the Sorbonne University in Paris and the University of Le Havre. On this occasion, the Secretary General of Eurispes, Marco Ricceri, will present a report on the main results of the analyses and reflections carried out in the context of the BRICS Laboratory of the Institute and will co-chair three specific sessions dedicated to the evaluation of the impact of the “rise of Asia” in the Western world (Session n. 13), in the Mediterranean area (Session n. 24), in the context of the BRICS and G20 coordination (Session n. 25). The role of the so-called non-aligned countries (NAM) in building a more balanced and sustainable recovery in accordance with the principles of the United Nations and their contribution to the moderation of the tensions that currently exist among the major development actors will be particularly explored, by taking into account that these are 120 states that have maintained their international links, as witnessed by the periodic summits (the 18th summit was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on 25-26 October 2019 https://www.un.org/pga/74/2019/10/25/non-aligned-movement-summit/).
The Conference offers an international platform for discussion for a wide range of scientific disciplines experts, practitioners, civil society representatives. Organised in general sessions and 35 parallel thematic sessions, it registers the active participation of some 140 speakers from 50 countries, from Japan in the East, Canada in the West, South Africa in the South, Sweden in the North.
Eurispes’ active participation in this important international initiative has developed on the basis of the collaborative relationships built in recent years with Prof. Darwis Khudori, from the University of Le Havre, promoter of the initiative, who joined the Institute’s Scientific Committee in 2019. As a sign of reciprocity, the Secretary General of Eurispes became a permanent member of the Scientific Board of the international conference.
“The rise of the West has transformed the world. The rise of Asia will lead to an equally significant transformation. […] The rise of Asia will be good for the world. Hundreds of millions of people will be rescued from the clutches of poverty […] the West should welcome the transformation of the Asian condition’: these words of Singaporean writer and intellectual, Kishore Mahbubani, form the basis of the major discussion between experts and scholars organised by the two French universities. Kishore Mahbubani’s words raise many questions. “The rise of Asia will be good for the world”, what does that mean? Good for whom, or for what? For peoples, nations, States? To what extent is the European Union, and Italy in particular, able to understand the value of these new processes and equipped to seize the opportunities implicit in them?
Eurispes’ participation in the international initiative on Asia is linked precisely to this last question and is aimed at grasping the elements that can help our country to live positively in the new situation that is emerging on a global level. To this end, one of the main objectives of the Conference is to encourage the deepening of knowledge through research and studies of an interdisciplinary nature and the organisation of international networks between Institutes and analysis centres.
