Appel letter to the Minister of Heritage and Culture
Dear Minister, Hon. Dario Franceschini,
the fire that on 1 February 2015 in Moscow destroyed the great Library of the Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences – INION of the Russian Academy of Sciences hit a cultural heritage of universal value.
Founded in 1918, the Library kept more than 14 million books and magazines, including precious medieval volumes and unique documents dating back to 1789; the Library had permanent collaborations with 874 partners in 69 countries worldwide, including Italy. Large part of this heritage is now destroyed or seriously damaged.
On behalf of Eurispes, of its Scientific Committee and its staff of researchers, I appeal to You so that, through Your impulse, Italy plays an active role in promoting and organizing a support action finalized to recover and restore, where possible, the damaged volumes. The great experience of our country in this type of activity, well illustrated by the work of the specialized institutions and agencies that refer to the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, could be made available to the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. I am convinced that in this disastrous occasion our country could give a great contribution and an important indication in the sign of strengthening the international scientific and cultural cooperation.
Waiting to know Your guidance, I send You my warmest greetings and best wishes of good work
Gian Maria Fara – President Eurispes
