1st National Report on the Condition of Children, Pre-adolescents and Adolescents (2000)

The 1st National Report on the Condition of Childhood and Pre-adolescence in Italy explores the object of study without pretending to reach a conclusive description but instead invites us to focus our attention on issues that are too often ( regrettably) neglected. It is an invitation to listen, therefore, an invitation to be there to understand the child’s experience. It is a question of the dramatic experiences of discomfort and abuse and the infinite number of daily life experiences of adults and children.

Telefono Azzurro was set up and operates so that the silence on childhood becomes a voice and an ear that stops to listen. Thanks to the research work carried out over the years, Eurispes has pioneered the analysis of the many, too many social fragilities that affect our Country. Therefore, the two associations have decided to carry out this initiative to contribute to a more profound knowledge of the different childhood dimensions.

There are many reasons for tackling and investigating the condition of children. Still, first and foremost, one thing that is for sure: in an increasingly articulated and complex society, in which traditional terms of analysis and reference are losing their weight and reliability, a scientific, socio-statistical approach can provide valuable elements for theoretical elaborations and practical applications that want to be genuinely effective in understanding and helping children. The general impression is that the world of children is too often interpreted from the grown-up point of view through ineffective and misleading tools, conditioned by too many mass-media myths, by ostentatious behaviour and by judgemental stereotypes.
