Education Policies Observatory
The data of the national education system have been in front of everyone’s eyes for years. In international rankings, Italian universities are struggling. In educational performance, we are at the bottom of the rankings, highlighting a gulf between North and South that has not been bridged even in the 160 years of unified history.
To remedy this situation, we do not need detailed interventions but structural policies that take time, distinguishing between contingent and long-term challenges.
Education is central to the future of any country. Yet, according to all indicators, in Italy, although it has played and is still playing a very important role in social advancement, enabling the social rise of millions of Italians, the education system is losing ground compared to others, with the directly related drifts of institutional inefficiency, public corruption and organised crime.
Qualitative investment in education pays off at the national level since, as is well known, there is a direct relationship between school quality and GDP growth. It is no coincidence that countries that invest more in education become richer, and in Italy, even a small increase in the OECD-PISA indicators could lead to a 5% increase in GDP.
Therefore, it is necessary to initiate a political and cultural debate in our country on education.
In this sense, the objectives that the Eurispes Observatory on Education Policies has set itself are to place the issue of education at the centre of the political, scientific and cultural debate with initiatives and research; to monitor the quality of expenditure and the effectiveness of the reforms linked to the educational mission of the PNRR.
In this initiative, we have involved the most significant pedagogical associations, the most prestigious cultural institutions, public institutions, as well as experts and sectors that have to contaminate education. This is an area that represents a meeting point for all sciences, in the knowledge that education is so important for society that it cannot be dealt with by educators alone.
The Observatory is directed by Mario Caligiuri of the University of Calabria.
