Conference at the Pontifical Gregorian University. Eradicating Modern Slavery. What is the role of religions? Marco Omizzolo participating for Eurispes

“The role of religions in eradicating modern slavery” is the title of the international conference taking place at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Piazza della Pilotta 4, on Friday 25 February (14:00-19:30) and Saturday 26 February 2022 (09:00-13:00).

The term modern slavery refers to situations of exploitation from which a person cannot break free or cannot refuse because of threats, violence, coercion, fraud or power abuse. The term is an umbrella term including human trafficking, slavery and slavery-like practices, forced labour, debt bondage, the worst forms of child labour and forced marriage. Scholars, religious leaders and professionals will discuss modern slavery – from human trafficking to forced labour practices – and reflect on how religious and secular institutions can work together to empower and accompany the most vulnerable and effectively counter the phenomenon.

Speakers: Card. Francesco Montenegro, archbishop emeritus of Agrigento, Tomoya Obokata, United Nations special rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery, David Hollenbach, professor at the “Walsh school of foreign service” at Georgetown University, Eugenia Bonetti, founder and president of the NGO “Slaves no more”; Sheikh Armiyawo Shaibu, spokesperson for the Ghanaian National Chief Imam; Cristina Molfetta, researcher for the Migrantes Foundation; Jean-René Bilongo, Flai-Cgil trade union representative; Gianfranco Della Valle, Italian national anti-trafficking hotline. Marco Omizzolo, professor and sociologist, will attend the Congress on behalf of Eurispes.

According to global estimates of modern slavery, more than 40 million people were trapped in modern slavery on any given day in 2016. Among them, 15.4 million were in a forced marriage and nearly 25 million were subjected to labour exploitation.

Simultaneous translation (EN-IT) will be available and it will be possible to follow the meeting online. Free entrance with mandatory registration by 24 February. To attend the event in person, it is mandatory to hold an enhanced COVID-19 Green Pass.
